I'm going to share my story here as I've managed to lose weight during 2018-19 in just 3-4 months. I took about 9,000 to 14,000 steps every day. In addition, I was taking care of my diet and doing some extra light workouts. I reduced my weight from 185 lbs to 160 lbs.
I used a cheap smart band and a couple of fitness apps to monitor my steps. To test how different these are counting. But it wasn't that much of a difference.
Weight loss is a great experience, my friends and family members were surprised to see a new me.

To improve your current fitness level, try adding some smaller milestones of 500-1000 steps more to your current average steps. After a week you will have adapted the change easily, then continue the same.
If you are walking 5000 steps then add 500 or 1000 more steps to it for the first week. Then you will automatically adjust to that and then you can add another 500 or 1000 steps.
Apart from walking you should add some more exercise. You could start jogging, cycling, etc. This will make your body more versatile and therefore increase the fitness level.
How to stay motivated?
You need to be careful and committed to your health. The more time and care you give to your body, it will definitely come back to you.
You need to be disciplined to stay motivated. Motivation can come and go for some time, but the disciplined person who follows the routine will never fail. And it will naturally boost your confidence when you achieve your goals.
